Description of the 2016 Tomorrow/Today Challenge:
According to recent studies, 65% of students today will be employed in jobs that have yet to be invented. Of these jobs, the majority will be technology-driven and demand a highly skilled workforce. The 2016 Tomorrow/Today Challenge will test 24 teams of BC students in grades 6 – 12 to apply STEM based applications and research-knowledge about 4 economic sectors in BC (Natural Resources, Transportation, Tourism and Construction) and use their imaginations to predict in-demand careers in the year 2025.
The Challenge: Each student team will be assigned a sector. Students will research the sector to determine what industry within the sector they will focus on. Through this research, studentswill create the following:
1. An imagined career that they predict will be required for that industry in the year 2025.
2. A piece of equipment or technology that will be used by a person in that career.
3. A day-in-the-life video about what a person in this career does, why they do it and how they do it.
4. Surprise Challenge – teams will be given a surprise challenge to further test their ingenuity and creativity!
Celebrity Judges: Celebrity judges will be asked to attend the student presentations and judge student teams according to a specific set of criteria provided to them on the day of the event. Celebrity Judges will also be asked to present team winners with their medal at the Award Show immediately after the presentations.
