This season, Destination Imagination BC is looking for teachers and school communities ready to try something different.
DI gives students a real problem, a team, and the freedom to figure it out themselves. No adult interference in the solution. No single right answer. Just kids learning to think, collaborate, and build something they’re genuinely proud of, together.
It works in the classroom and after school. It fits grades K-12. And it connects directly to what you’re already expected to teach.
DI isn’t a separate subject to plan around.
It’s a ready-made way to deliver the applied, hands-on design process ADST already requires. Whether your class is doing coding in Scratch, building with Sphero, or working through a technical elective, DI gives students a real, open-ended problem to apply those skills to, in teams, with a real audience at the end.
Three ways to bring DI into your classroom
All three options are free to BC educators, funded through a grant from the Government of British Columbia, and mapped directly onto the BC Ministry of Education Applied Design, Skills and Technologies curriculum at every grade level.
1. Instant Challenge
One class period. No prep beyond opening the envelope. A single timed, open-ended problem solved in teams. This is the lowest-barrier entry point and a great way to see how your students respond to open-ended thinking.
2. Skillfire
A two+ week in-class unit. A structured, non-competitive design sprint that takes students through a full applied design cycle, with assessment tools included. No planning from scratch required.
3. Team Challenge
The full program. A team develops one challenge solution over a term, with the option to compete at Regional and Provincial tournaments. This is project-based learning with a real audience and a real deadline.
