BC Original Minds Association is actively looking for a qualified candidate to join our Board of Directors in the role of Treasurer.

Who we are:
BC Original Minds Association has been a leader in creative problem solving programs
for British Columbia students since 1983. Since 1999, BCOMA has held the license to
offer Destination Imagination in British Columbia, a project-based learning opportunity
that blends STEM with the Arts and social entrepreneurship. Students in Kindergarten to
Grade 12 who participate in Destination Imagination improve in creative and critical
thinking, build on their unique strengths, learn how to design and manage a project, and
gain communication, critical thinking, creative and collaboration skills. A board of
directors who meet quarterly, guides the organization and supervises the Key staff person
(the Affiliate Director).

Job Summary:
Looking for a way to channel that creative energy in a volunteer capacity? Do you have or are you interested in
cultivating the innovative mindset? This is an incredible opportunity to share your skills
with an exciting, fun and engaging Global organization. All volunteer board members are required
to participate in the policy making, planning, goal setting and evaluation activities
relating to all aspects of the British Columbia Original Minds Association (BCOMA)
which oversees the Destination Imagination British Columbia Affiliate. Board members
assume legal and ethical accountability for all activities of BCOMA and participate on
Board Committees as required, or at the request of the President of the Board of
Directors. This is a 3 year appointment.

General Roles & Responsibilities:

  1. Supports the values and mission of BCOMA.
  2. Makes a personal commitment of time, effort and financial support to the best of their
    ability.
  3. Attends all Board of Directors meetings (BOD meetings occur quarterly, 4-5 per year, 2-4 hours each, virtual and in-person).
  4. Prepares for Board decision-making meetings by reviewing all relevant materials prior
    to each board meeting.
  5. Participates in Board training and orientation programs.
  6. Participates in the:
    a) Development of long term and short term goals and objectives.
    b) Management and allocation of funds consistent with community needs.
    c) Adoption and monitoring of internal annual budget.
    d) Evaluation of policy implementation and Board growth and development.
    e) Development of sound personnel policies and procedures.
  7. Represents BCOMA and acts as an ambassador at public events. Attends as many of
    events as possible.
  8. Participates on one or more Board committees as required
  9. Suggests candidates as future Board members.

Roles of a Treasurer:
The Treasurer will oversee BCOMA’s budget, financial planning and cash management while limiting risks to the organization. The successful applicant will have previous experience in financial management and will be an integral part of maintaining positive relationships with banks and financial institutions. The Treasurer will work closely with
 the Board Executive and senior staff to ensure appropriate financial systems that have been put in place are constantly followed. Duties include working with Affiliate Director to approve monthly expenses and support in the development of the annual budget and create long-term projections based on needs and upcoming projects. Work to maintain an efficient system of policies that adequately control treasury activities. Work with contracted bookkeeper to prepare annual CRA charitable filing and handle outsourced treasury functions.

Time Commitment:
Approximately 2-8 hours/month in addition to board meetings. 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be a certified CPA
  • Must reside in British Columbia
